Judith, Nikkei stock futures trade on various exchanges across the world, e.g. CBOE, before the TSE equity market opens. When the volume of open put contracts is large, the Nikkei opens lower etc.

Here's info on the NIK options. However, the volume is so low, it couldn't possibly have any impact on the Japanese market. I don't know on what exchange your Fidelity index option trades.
