> fail like the Gateway stores did.

I was in Costco a couple of days ago, trying to decide if it would be worth it to join for a few items I know they sell cheaper than anyone else.

Looking at flat screen TVs. Dozens and dozens of them. I remarked to the sales guy my frustration at retailers who offer tons of crap among a few good items and how much time it takes normal people to research which item to buy and how I wish retailers would do that work for me.

He agreed - which I though was pretty interesting being as he didn't know me from Joe Sixpack.

The problem with communism was no stuff to buy...

The problem with capitalism is too much smelly POS crap to wade through to find something decent to buy.

Oh, and no Apple products in that Costco store. Took a look at the HTC One X as that seems to be one of the better Androids... sigh who knows? In any case the agreement terms were not made 100% clear so right off the bat I just said forget it. No time for this non-sense. They had about 15 smart phones. Who has time to research even that many.

Is there any wonder why Apple stores are so successful? At this point I'm thinking my first smartphone will probably be an iPhone.

Call to Apple and visit to my local Apple Store and I got my shiny new iPad 3.

Took it to the Mall and had a cute techy girl install my Zagg Invisible Shield and now I'm syncing.

Still takes a really long time to restore which is a drag and my only complaint so far.

Agreed, although the comparison is not apples to apples, as it were. Gateway was just a bare bones showroom; they didn't even stock the computers in the store as I recall!

Still, this has to be one of the biggest underestimations of all time in retailing, I would venture to say. Though back then, I think there was still a lot of Windoze and PC-centric people who were still looking at Apple as that "beleaguered" company that was about 90 days from extinction but we all know the reality now. If they had that "beleaguered" mindset, how could they possibly see that the Apple retail stores would be a runaway success?
