Bay Area might have been an exception. In most of the country the gap between the big coastal cities and everywhere else seemed to really widen coming out of the nasty 1980-82 downturn..

CA housing prices took off just as prop 13 got approved by the voters in the mid 1970s. Prior to that, CA housing prices tracked US housing prices and even trailed them at times.
