I didn't think that. I just haven't seen anything from either of these companies that is a tangible threat other than a press release. Flash is definitely a concern if Iomega attempts to attack the high end market.

The war you speak of hasn't even started. Great SYQT finally delivered. But delivering and selling are two completely different things. SyQuest has always had superior "technology", Iomega has superior marketing. Syquest is charging up a hill that is well fortified by Iomega, until they make a significant break in any Iomega barrier I'll keep my IOM shares.

Have you ever met KE or any of his executive troops? Don't worry, complacency is taken care of quickly by Iomega management.

I'd suggest you reevaluate why you invested in Iomega. If you invested in Iomega because you think its a technology company then you will never sleep at night.

At this point I think a 200MB Zip that can read and write 100 MB Zip disks would be very hard for Sony to compete against. The million a month (and growing) that Iomega is now shipping is a tough hill for any new competitor to climb given that Iomega can defend themselves easily by upping the capacity.

It's great to see some detailed discussion of substantial issues. With respect to being lax and overtaken by new technology - Iomega has shown just the opposite. If you look at their R&D efforts and the results, they are definitely not resting on their laurels.

I don't believe Sony's impact is being dismissed, but as previously mentioned, we don't have any pricing info to see where they compete nor info on when they can ship and in what volume. Once these are known, we can better access the potential impact to Zip sales. To date, Iomega has great track record in responding to competition as evidenced by their market share. If we start to see major inroads into that market share (which I don't expect) then will be the time to worry.

As an aside, I've seen the following projections for high capacity drive sales for 1998:
