I have met with Pakistani venture capitalists. I work with several Muslims designing server CPUs. I've been to school with several Muslims. Every single one of them is just fine.

I have the same experience. And at one time, I would have drawn the same conclusions from it.

There are a couple things though. One, those are individuals, well-educated, integrated into western culture. Not necessarily representative of their home culture. If they weren't the kind of people they are, they wouldn't have gotten where they are professionally.

Even with western educated Muslim however there are surprises ... like Nidal Hassan the Army psychiatrist, like the financial analyst who became the wouldbe Times Square car bomber, like Mohammed Atta with a graduate degree from Hamburg, like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed ( a mechanical engineer educated in North Carolina). I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't people who knew them once who thought they were fine too.

Beyond this, like I said earlier, I think there's a problem with group dynamics when the Muslim population reaches a certain level. The mideastern culture gets duplicated when there are enough Muslims ro propagate it. I've read of women who married western educated men from Saudi Arabia or Iran, who said their husbands treated them just like a western man, but when they traveled home, they reverted on the plane trip. By the time they landed, they were barely interacting with them, treating them the way Saudis treat their women in public. People respond to the people around them and when Muslims are surrounded by enough other Muslims most of them will take on the expectations of Muslim societies.
