By the time other mfrs. products are shipping in meaningful #s IOM could have 15-20 million units in installed base. This will be a pretty significant headstart to overcome and perhaps more daunting if competeing products don't have Zip compatibility.

I think the real key to continued success will be products like Clik.
In addition to opening new markets (film replacement, handheld storage, etc.), Clik offers an early look to the future of storage products with its small size. I think that it is telling us something about a future generation of Zip products. After all Zip will eventually be replaced also, just like the current battle to replace diskettes.

i'll be jiggered: CABOT puts IOM back on "buy" status mid-day - after he told his loyal troops to avoid the stock at $17, he now says buy on the increasing momentum at $31 or better. avoid at $17, buy at $31. that's momentum trading folks he obviously believes IOM has it again.

it was sent out to his troops via his fax hotline and is written about in his upcoming newsletter

We will have plenty of time to follow this story over the next year or so, which will be met headon by KE and his engineers and marketeers who are some of the best in the business. By the way, I wonder who might have an advantage when the removable drive business is only a miniscule segment of their overall worldwide sales or an aggressive focused company like IOM whose sole purpose in life is the removable storage market? To me, it would seem that in this case "David" has a definte advantage over "Goliath" in accomplishing this goal.

The Zip is just entering the true "growth phase" and if they can solve their supplier problems and keep expanding and speeding up their capacity, which IOM seems quite capable in doing, then I don't think that there will be much to worry about for at least a year or so. By that time IOM will have solid pentetration into the laptop market and the OEM market for desktop computers. Jaz and Jaz II will continue to do well in their high end segment as their main competition at this stage appears to be the drives from Syquest, a company on the ropes and with severe financial problems. Ditto will continue to sell, but at lower numbers than previous years... tape is dying out as a consumer/office backup device over the long term.

The other items currently available, Buz and Recordit should do well, but are just products to raise the tie ratios of the Zip drive population. Of course, the Clik! product line is now under research and development by several mainline companies including MCI and Citizen... not small players to say the least! At this time next year we should be looking at another 12 to 15 million Zip drives depending on continued OEM and retail penetration. The wall just gets higher and higher!!

And, as far a BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY, the 3.5 disk is only about $10 as an addon even in below $1,000 boxes, and there are already add on 3.5 drives for laptops... if you really need to get some of your old files into your road warrior's HD.

So, I am still very confident in KE and the Roy crew to perform as expected and I'm sure that they are taking all this new competition very seriously indeed, and because they are, I have great confidence in IOM and the way it is being run at the present time... I really can sleep well at nite and am glad to see the company in the very competent hands of those who are at the helm today. All the best to all,

Not to Worry Mates!
