Germany financed WWI with debt and experienced quite a bit of inflation long before the war ended. It was an all-or-nothing strategy and debt didn't matter if the victory was relatively certain. Economic turmoil would have ensued without a victory in which Germany could force reparations from the losers.

Below is a picture of the grave of Rudolf E.A. Havenstein from April, 2012. He was the President of Reichsbank and chief printer until November, 1923.
