They thought as a goal to achieve. Not as an event. At that time, they were not sure they could make it. So they try to unite the continent.

It did not work. You can´t make a single entity in a Africa united. They have to much ingrained tribalism to be able to unite even inside their own borders. As soon as they discover some wealth, the guys on the wealth area want to secede. See Sudan.

But do not forget the English. Always the English. The perfidious English drew the maps putting different people inside a map. Take Nigeria for instance: Yurubas, Hausas and Ibos. See Divide and Rule.

Even a tiny little country like Benin Republic has a couple of different ethnic groups to deal with.
