True but I think the point to which you were responding still stands. CORBA ORBs are a commodity and there's no reason why Borland's competitors have to buy it from VSGN. There is a very recent example of this effect (only in reverse): ATT sold off Lucent, and Lucent's revenues went way up. The reason: the telcos were more disposed to buy equipment from Lucent once Lucent was no longer owned by their competitor. The same thing is likely to apply to all those tool vendors who have licensed VSGN's ORB.

You ask what I would have done. Without benefit of all the data, I think the more conservative thing would have been to stay the course. Revenues were growing and good things were happening. I don't see what's being accomplished by owning the ORB instead of licensing it.

I'm long Borland too and a big fan of the tools, but let us be objective. If Borland's business should fail to unfold the way we hope it does, I would like to detect it as soon as possible. And in this marketplace you have to agree that there's no guarantees.
