In other words, you are envisioning a relatively peaceful retrenchment to a somewhat lower economic level, and -- life goes on. That sounds actually pretty good.

It's been many years since I've spent any time in Greece, but it seems that they have developed a very socialistic mindset -- which means that for as long as there is anyone who has more than I have, I want you to take from that person, not from me. There is a certain redistributionist assertiveness in this way of thinking -- and a potential for sharpening the tensions within the society.

Let's hope that in the course of their history - read: warfare - the Europeans have learned to play their political chess a little wiser, calculating more than just one move ahead....
