For the upteenth time, SS and medicare are not entitlements. We paid into the system. Now, whether we have paid enough is a matter of discussion. Labelling them as entitlements are just what Paul Ryan like to make you believe. I think that you know better. - Manalagi

whether you paid in or not is not what makes something an Entitlement. It becomes an Entitlement when the benefits are defined by law. What's crazy about Entitlements is that they are unsustainable because those benefits far outstrip the amounts paid in. That's where we are today with SS and Medicare. I don't view the word "Entitlement" to be pejorative. Rather, it is simply what you call these things. The below definition is pretty hard to argue with.
