The low cost Compaq in the retail stores is selling for about $1,000 with a monitor. It is described by retail salemen as a throw awy unit which will be obsolete in two years because it is not upgradeable. DELL is not in this market segment.

Compaq has another product at the $ 1,200 price range (include the monitor) which is more upgradeable. There is much competition in this price range from HP, Packard Bell and soon IBM. However, DELL also has a PC in the 1200-1300 price range including monitor. During his interview he mentioned that these PC's were selling well.

There are a lot of other competitors in these to market segments!
