May 29, 2012, 10:53 pm After Texas Vote, Romney Secures G.O.P. Nomination By MICHAEL SCHWIRTZ
After a long and wearying primary battle, Mitt Romney officially secured the Republican presidential nomination on Tuesday with a victory in a Texas primary that delivered the final batch of delegates needed ahead of the party’s convention in August.

In a statement, Mr. Romney said he was “honored” and “humbled” by the victory.

“Our party has come together with the goal of putting the failures of the last three and a half years behind us,” he said. “I have no illusions about the difficulties of the task before us. But whatever challenges lie ahead, we will settle for nothing less than getting America back on the path to full employment and prosperity.”

Mr. Romney, who effectively clinched the nomination weeks ago, has wasted little time in shifting focus to the general election. On Tuesday, he l aunched a fresh offensive against the Obama campaign, accusing the president of wastefulness and reckless spending and highlighting the political divisiveness that has become a hallmark of his first term.

“On November 6, I am confident that we will unite as a country and begin the hard work of fulfilling the American promise and restoring our country to greatness,” he said in his statement.
