Nightly Business Report transcript, 11/25/97.

Darren Gersh (NBR Correspondent): In the 1980's, Lincoln says, the Japanese mafia or "Yakuza" as it's known, laundered their illegal profits by borrowing from banks and investing in the booming real estate and stock markets. When the market crashed, the "Yakuza" loans went bad.

Edward Lincoln (Brooking Institution): And these are not the kind of loans you want to call in. In fact, there has been at least one murder, a Sumitomo Bank executive who was shot and killed and after that happened, people found out that it was his responsibility to go out and try to collect on these loans.

GERSH: No one believes corruption is the main cause of Japan's economic troubles, but it is an important factor. By some estimates 25 percent of the bad loans on the books of Japanese banks may be tied to organized crime.
