I read on CNBC that european banks are being coerced into buying billions of their own countries' debt with the incentive that the banks do not have to count that debt against capital requirements.
Maybe the same thing is happening here so the Treasury has no trouble refinancing debt.
The weirdness and financial distortions of these near zero interest rates (Germany is even lower), has amazed me but all I can say is that the western governments have proved to be very resourceful in perpetuating a status quo.
