Paul, how do you figure bay is 28.5 off their all-time high?
Bay is currently at 30, I remember when bay traded at 48 and change.
It might of even broke 49. So bay is closer to being 60 percent off
their all-time highs and maybe 28.5 percent of their 52 week highs.
Just trying to keep you honest.

Joe

g'day, Paul & all - Paul, I can understand how you feel (re: buy & hold) as I ve been taking a bath in many many stks who have gone down the tube after a brief moment of glory. Right now, BAY is one of the surviving stks for me.

Maybe it is too late to worry about the past; however, I ve discovered that letting my portfolio stray into the margins is not a good for the buy-and-hold b/c of the volatility. It is far better to use margin for trading purposes only. But then, different people work differently.

all - ve a good thanksgiving

Paul: Well said about Long term investing. However, if you had money to invest now, you would look at Csco p/s of ~8.5 vs Bay p/s of ~2.5.

Also, I have come to realize that management is extremely important. Where would Bay be if it had had great management over the last 5 years???

With regard to great management, this David House not only takes no prisoners, but he is putting his money where his mouth is. I own Cisco, also, but this is where I have been putting my money recently.

I am also a long-term buy and hold investor.wj

Paul, I am nominating you for investor emeritus of this thread. Nine years! Whew. I confess that I have traded BAY pretty aggressively since summer of '96 and have good money to show for it. It has definitely been better to trade than to buy and hold. I have a sneaky feeling that, assuming we all do not succumb to Asian contagion, '98 will be a year to just hold BAY. That's basically my plan. My average cost on shares I have now is about 33 1/2.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Paul,

Point well taken but there will always be the argument that not everyone bought Bay at some particular point in time whether it be 1/1/97, 3/17/94 or 7/23/96. 1/97 happens to be the start of this year and quite frankly the start of a Ludwickless Bay so it seems to be a good place to start. I think the momentum is still building and will continue to build thru 98 and beyond.

The question was why buy Bay when you could Cisco. Going back 2 years Cisco was a better buy. Going back to the start of this year, Bay has proven to be a better buy. Starting today and looking back in 12 month's I think there is going to a larger % gain on Bay than Cisco.
