I just watched John Edwards’ remarks after he was found not guilty on one of the counts against him and a mistrial was declared on the remainder of the counts.

I always wonder whether people like Edwards (and Gore, and the like) ever did have a conscience, or a respect for the truth. He certainly does not have one now.

He spent the majority of the ‘speech’ talking about how many poor and needy people he has helped in his area of the country over the past three decades, how much he loves his children, and, by default, how much he loved his wife ... and he ended the speech by telling us that ‘God isn’t through with him yet.’ He is certain that there is much more good he will be doing in the future. I felt as if I were listening to a young, male version of Mother Teresa.

Let’s put aside the fact that this man betrayed his terminally ill wife, and thereby betrayed their children as well.

But let’s not put aside the fact that this man made tens, if not hundreds, of millions of dollars in malpractice lawsuits that were based on junk science. He claimed, and ‘proved’ with the help of fringe elements of the medical profession, that children born with cerebral palsy were generally the result of improper birthing methods (a ‘fact’ that has since been refuted by practically every respected expert and study on the subject). As a result, obstetricians left the state of North Carolina in droves, making it significantly more difficult for young women in the state to receive proper and timely prenatal care. Another unfortunate result of his bogus crusade is that the number of Caesarian sections now performed in North Carolina has also skyrocketed, putting mothers in much greater danger both during and after birth.

But John, by his own skewed and self-absorbed perceptions, made his fortune ‘helping the poor and needy’ in North Carolina.

Mr. Edwards is a narcissistic monster who believes he can continue to pull the wool over the eyes of most Americans. It’s just too bad he was successful in achieving that with this jury. Let’s hope the next one is more clear-headed.
