Internet 2 is scheduled to open up in Dec or Jan but will be limited to academic institutions. They will be doing research and distributing video, audio, and other multimedia applications. I2 will have increased bandwidth with sustained data transfer rates of 100Mbps compared to the present average of 1-2 Mbps. There are 117 universities involved with a goal of nearly a 100. IBM is helping fund this project along with Cisco and I think Bay. Most of this info comes out of Computer Shopper for Dec. Does anyone have contacts at Syracuse to see if they are involved in this project. If so the role for the DVG would be obvious.
