Colonel Anthony Reed’s Memorial Day 2012 Address Culpeper National Cemetery, Virginia Thank you for those kind words Colonel Price. Coming from a Soldier with your distinguished service… they mean a great deal to me. During our initial meeting… Colonel Price and I discovered we shared several overseas experiences. I will speak to those this morning. I would also like to express my sincere appreciation to Cindy for inviting me here today and to also offer my gratitude and admiration to her for the extraordinary manner in which she maintains these hallowed grounds. Please join me in thanking Cindy! Fellow Veterans, General Officers, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen… It has been said that to command American Soldiers is the highest honor an officer can receive. Having been so honored by my adopted country on a number of occasions… I would agree… but also add that to stand here before YOUtoday speaking for ALL here who have gone on before… is of equal… if not greater… import to me. In fact… I am somewhat embarrassed by speaking today. Why… you ask? Because… Within your midst are distinguished veterans… and wounded warriors… from the 300th Combat Engineer Battalion… whom German General Sepp Dietrick refered to at the Battle of the Bulge as “Those damned Engineers”… the fabled1st Cav… the United States Marine Corps… theUnited States Navy… the United States Air Force and the Service that is at war 24/7/365… the United States Coast Guard. Worthy also of special note is our very own storied 80thDivision… the Soldiers of which comprised the Infantry element of General Patton’s Corps when he relieved the 101st Airborne at Bastogne… and… who today serve proudly in Iraq and Afghanistan. I would also point out that there is at least one Veteran of the lonely and dangerous life of the ‘clandestine service ’… of which I have some familiarity… and also aVirginia Military Institute Hall of Famer… and a distinguished former US Army Engineer officer. God bless you ALL gentlemen! I do not know if I should be more honored… or intimidated… by your presence. I would also stress how special YOU are, ladies and gentlemen. To wit… Within easy commuting distance of this cemetery… reside over 1.5 million US citizens. And yet… it is youfew… the proud… the committed and the faithful who came here today to honor our nations fallen… toremember… and I thank you… from the bottom of my heart. I'm sure most came today expecting a speech about service and sacrifice. However… today I am going to spend our few precious moments together on a point of strategic importance to each and every one of you… and more significantly.. your grandchildren. I want to talk about a spectrum of insurgency… some would say… warfare… relatively unknown to the Western Democracies… but… which involves each and every one you here and now THE SPECTRUM Uniquely… in so doing… I want to impart what I think would be the inner most thoughts of the brave and selfless veterans lying here today… were they… able to speak for themselves in this matter. What I think… ladies and gentlemen… is of little consequence! THEY are the wise ones! I will use as the basis for their ‘call to arms’ the country of my birth… and which many still refer to as America's mother country… England. Please… understand that as a former British Subject… it is painful for me to share with you today these… my very personal thoughts. My ancestral heritage of service to the Crown… and the British Army… traces back to my great grandfather and the Khyber Pass. My namesakes… are those… on one side… of a former British Lieutenant General… Sir Joseph Tuckfield… and General Michael Collins… the Irish patriot… on the other. So… you will understand… that what I am about to say is not said easily… nor without searing… forethought. That being said… my conclusions were reached during recent visits to my British units in England and Wales as Commandant General of Countess Mountbatten's Own. And… regrettably… My conclusions were recently confirmed… by *Lloyds Bank of* London… The Wall Street Journal… theManhattan Institute's City Journal… theInternational Strategic Studies Association and… closer to home… my British and Australian officers… several of whom hold Flag Rank. To the point… out of the mouths of babes comeunbelievable obscenities. Increasingly… the English are a people who know neither inner nor outer restraint. They turn to aggression… if not to violence… the moment they are thwarted… even in matters of insignificance. And… those who are neither aggressive nor violent are by NO means sure that the law will take their side in the event of a fracas. So… Sadly… it is better, or easier, for them to pretend not to notice anything… even if it means living in constant fear! Our Veterans cry out… "DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN HERE!" Under these circumstances… it is hardly surprising that… according to a survey recently conducted byLloyds Bank… a fifth of all people with assets of more than $640,000 are thinking about leaving England. Other recent surveys have shown that at least 50% of the population wants to leave… in the main to flee theother 50% of the population! They cry out.. "DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN HERE!" It is difficult to overstate the deleterious effect on the quality of life in modern Britain… of incivility… badmanners… bad behavior and rampant alcoholism! One small manifestation of this tragedy is the littering of the country. No hedgerow… even in the most beautiful countryside… is without its discarded plastic bottles of soft drinks… and wrappings of take-away food. In the matter of litter, the British are now… by far… the dirtiest people in the Western World. A further sign of their unsocial mind set. They cry out.. "DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN HERE!" In other words, practically NO behavior is beyond the pale for the British state. Sadly… the freedom to behave badly is almost the only freedom valued by… or left to… young Britons. They cry out.. "DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN HERE!" The people who want to flee Britain are NOT… economic migrants. It is NOT high taxes that they object to… Many want to move to France, where taxes are even higher… ! NO, NO, NO… it is BARBARISM they wish to escape! They are cultural refugees… in search of a more civilized homeland, where fewer people are uncouth… or militantly vulgar. They cry out.. "DO NOT… LET THIS HAPPEN HERE!" Even middle-class people now behave in an increasingly uncouth and rough fashion in Britain because they think that by doing so… they are expressing their solidarity with the lower reaches of their society. Imitation… they think… is the highest form ofsympathy! This… of course… is an implicit insult to many of England's poor… for poverty and bad manners are by no means bedfellows. Thus… of great and growing concern… is the belief that incivility in Britain has a militant or ideological edge to it. The uncivil British are not merely uncivilized by default… Instead… they appear to actively hate and repudiate… civilization… The very civilization they once so astutely… and energetically… crafted for mankind! At this point you might rightly ask: Whether the individualism which gave birth to the fabled Magna Carta and the incomparable United States Constitution… both of which placed freedom at the core of their experiments… and which began some three centuries ago… can be reignited? AND… you may ask… if in so doing… can the vastunproductive and uncivil… be swept aside? THAT… Ladies and Gentlemen… is for you to ponder. THAT… ladies and gentlemen… is for YOU to decide! And… as you do… I beg you to consider our grandchildren… and their social inheritance! In closing.. I would add that a learned colleague… who is also a dear friend… once observed that "Empires and nations are as snow upon the desert. They melt away". Ponder his wisdom for a moment… “THEY SIMPLY MELT AWAY!” Greg would say we are no different… BUT… in answer to which the Veterans lying here today would respond… in RESOUNDING unison and with afirm and measured cadence... “ THE BRITISH MUST DECIDE THEIR OWN FATE… NO MATTER… THEIR DECISION; NO MATTER… THEIR FATE; *DO NOT BETRAY OUR* SACRIFICES; DO … NOT… LET… THIS… HAPPEN… HERE!”** Thank You!
