I think I was 19 and living with my Mom while going to college. I remember approaching my Mom and asking her why she never mentioned these books to me as they they represented all of the thoughts that were already going through my head. I think I registered as a Libertarian the next year.

it actually was quite a relief to read AS and FH. At that point in my life, I really felt like I was alone in the world with my thinking. Those two books proved that I wasn't alone. Later I found out that one of my Mom's best friends (and now one of my best friends/mentor) hung out with the objectivist crowd and knew Rand.

I read George Orwell's "1984" and "Animal Farm" years ago, and usually think of one or the other every day. We are living it out, especially now with the Obama Administration.
