It's a gamble, but it's one Microsoft had to make, while they had the clout to do so.
Dell, HP and a whole host of PC companies are putting their necks on the line for Window 8 tablet also. They are the one that taking the risk of producing the tablet.. Unless it catch fire out the gate, all these companies will loss money big time initially given lower per vendor unit volume. There is an interesting article looking at the cost side of Window 8 tablet. Most of the spec floating around seems to have a display resolution 1366x768, about 1.5-1.6 lb, 2.0mp camera up front and 8.0 camera at the back. So far have not see any discussion on power consumption (which seems to be good for the Atom chip base one), speed and any other attributes yet. OS is only one element in a tablet, ecosystems, hardware features, performance, manufacturing cost, 3rd party support etc all contribute to the success of a tablet. I think we will see a bloodbath in the competition to be the survivor of the window 8 tablet derby. If window 8 tablet sales is in the 8-10 million unit range, it can only support 2 to 3 vendors max. I am not sure anyone really know how many Window 8 tablet the market can support yet..
