I ran into Michael Murphy(of CTSL fame)this weekend at the MONY Show and
he said that IDT would be announcing shortly that ACER will be using the
C6. I hope he's right on this one, I bought big chuck of stock
yesterday.

This "XC" device could include anything from an old 486 to the low cost 5X86 parts SGS is making. Acer also tried their hand at one time with a 486 clone chip but dropped out of the fray when it was shown that they had largely just copied silicon from Intel. As I remeber, Acer never went beyond early 486 capability. I doubt that it will include a part from AMD, Cyrix or Intel. This could include the Centaur/IDT C6 part, but that is unlikely as well because although if ramped to millions of parts per year at 0.25 micron the cost of mfg. would be maybe $10 each, IDT is just at the early stages of production and could not supply the needed quantities anytime soon. They could technically produce parts in an Asian FAB but that would likely bring the ire of Intel and increase the chance of a lawsuit IMO.

IDT needs to walk before it runs in the MPU business. They have barely shown that they are at more than a crawl at this point - we are still waiting for pronouncements on manufacturing rates and yields and on speed bumps.

Regarding the Acer XC, it seems to me that the WinChip is too powerful to be used in these limited purpose appliances. These XC's sound more like they would only need a 486 class processor.
