The high end androids and nokia phone I looked at at Costco did not seem that much cheaper. My immediate thought was $100 difference amortized over two years is nothing compared to the time lost maintaining them and trying to sync those things to my iMac. Particularly since the added $100 or even $200 is tax deductible.

Not to mention I know that if I have some kind of disastrous problem with an iPhone I can take it to an Apple store and within an hour or so walk out with either a fixed phone or a new phone. My perception is a problem with an Android or Nokia phone is going to be a nightmare of sending it and having them make excuses.

That's just a perception.

Apple doesnt want to sell unsubsidized devices.

No doubt there are a lot of vested interests in the current non-transparent marketplace. And yes, Apple is at the top of the list because they pocket the extra subsidy.

On the other hand, all else being equal, I think Apple would prefer to have the direct relationship with the consumer on the hardware side and let the carriers fight it out on the service side. Just what I "feel".
