Re: EOY Selling

Is there a particular time in December when tax selling typically occurs?

What do you mean "December?" ;-)

Given the move of money into mutual funds during the past five years, their selling has become increasingly important. Selling losers for them serves two purposes:

1. Raises cash for capital gains distributions
2. Closing losers helps offset the aforementioned capital gains

A lot of this is now done in November.

Zeuspaul:
Selling short has a few quirks and would not suggest that you do it until you get a full understanding. One important rule of shorting is to understand that as opposed to going long a stock, your potential gain is limited but your potential loss has no limit. Point is a stock can only go down to zero but a stock going up has no limit. One way to avoid this is to buy option puts in which you are limited to the premium that you pay for the option. Downside to puts though is the fact that you are limited to a certain timeframe that could prove to be difficult to select because as with many shorts, timing is essential.
I would suggest that you get a good book to read up on shorting. And don't short LGND, it is too late.(:>)
