Sony tried retail stores awhile back that failed miserably. I don't think Samsung would be any more successful in retail than Sony, but who knows. Samsung has a lot more to offer with TV's, Droid phones, computers, Windows tablets, etc... The only thing they are missing is a entertainment product like the XBOX or Playstation. Apple's done will without one up til now, so it probably doesn't matter.

I do think that companies like Samsung are getting horrible execution with retailers like Best Buy. Maybe they could do better with their own small box stores.

It's not only valuable to compete, but to be in touch with customers.

Depending on the capital investment.

Imagine how quickly RIMM would have known that PlayBook couldn't sell for $499, had they had 3-4 stores? Over time, some products fail and some are priced wrong, even for successful companies. Knowing that quicker and cheaper than after a $100 million advertising campaign (Microsoft style) is worth having in your arsenal.

RIM discards 16 GB PlayBook tablet

TORONTO, June 7 (Reuters) - BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd will no longer produce the cheapest version of its poorly selling PlayBook tablet, but it said it remains committed to a tablet computer market it has struggled to break into.

RIM said it would phase out the 16 GB model of the PlayBook once stock currently with retailers is depleted. The company will continue to produce 32 and 64 GB versions of the device, which can hold more music, video and other content and which likely boast better margins.

RIM sold the 16 GB version for $199, while the 32 GB and 64 GB models are priced at $249 and $299.
