I agree 100% that these two companies do not represent serious competition and I'm sure the market knows this too.

What really worries me is that future buyers are going to decide that
low cost PCs are sufficient for their needs.

This is already being felt - even though I know it is logically and historically always the wrong way to think.

Consider this though - If I want to get a PII-300 at work (I have
a P-166 at work) - what justification can I give for this purchase?

If indeed we have reached a plateau at this time - it seems pointless
to pursue a policy of breakneck improvements - I'm sure you've
faced this question many times in the past - that's why I'd love to hear your opinion.
