Weekly Mobile Offshore Rig Count

Gulf of Mexico rig count increases

HOUSTON: A two-rig increase over last week in the number of rigs under contract in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico was recorded by Offshore Data Services' weekly mobile offshore rig count.

Today, 170 of the 176 mobile offshore drilling units in the Gulf of Mexico are under contract. The area's rig fleet utilization rate is 96.6 percent.

The European offshore rig count is unchanged from last week. Today, 107 of the area's 111 mobile offshore drilling rigs remain under contract. European offshore rig fleet utilization is 96.4 percent.

Worldwide, 580 mobile offshore drilling units are under contract. The
606-rig world drilling fleet's utilization rate is 95.7 percent.

Of note during the week was an order placed with a Texas shipyard for twonew $95 million drilling rigs. The rigs will be delivered in late 1999 and early 2000, and are expected to work in the Gulf of Mexico. At present, 50 new rigs are under construction worldwide at a total investment of more than $9.0 billion

FWIW Atwood is THE most conservative offshore driller in the business -- bar none. I have done deals with them in the past, and have tried to propose some deals this year...but they have tunnel vision and aren't interested in anything except what they are interested in.
