Are you talking CA or WI? I have not heard that WI state employees can retire after 20 years. If true, then that has to change under current economic conditions.
That's the crux of the problem. The union won't allowed that. I wish it is as easy as you wrote.

Its called negotiations. Given that unions have little leverage these days, I would be very surprised if that can't be accomplished. Of course, the unions in WI capitulated to Walker's demands only to be screwed by him.

IMO everyone is a little too worried about getting screwed. Public employees do many of the jobs that many Americans would not want to do.......these are not glamour jobs. They deserve to get a fair wage. If a friend of mine in the 90s, could make $350K three years out of business school, then a teacher should be making at least $60K. If some HR schmuck can make $4 million per year, then a fireman should at least be making $60k.

But no........everyone wants to shortchange gov't. They want to get rich and fat but don't want to pay for gov't services. Well I am here to tell you we are screwing ourselves. There are over 3 million skilled jobs open in this country and no one to fill them. Why? Because our public school system is failing us..........we are either turning out college grads or dropouts.............with very little in-between. We need to invest in those kids who won't be doctors but could be a skilled lathe operator or a sanitation worker.
