Well, at least there is a bit, just a bit, more nuance here. Your blanket assertion leaves room for some exceptions.
I am talking about a culture, not individuals.
Actually, you are talking about a kind of stereotype of one southern culture but only one. There were many and many remain.

The culture to which I pointed was multiple, a set of intellectual cultures, southern ones, a kind of culture of writers and playwrights, another of intellectuals. In addition there were more than one black culture--certainly one around the churches but ones that overlapped somewhat but were independent as well around music that was not church music. There were and are more than a few cultural differences between urban and rural southern blacks; and middle income and poor blacks.

It's not nor has it been, at least in recent memory, a one note Johnny culture.
