Yes, and easy to overlook the degree of the real suffering, and the whys.
I'm certainly not doing that. This conversation was about your observation that:
For whatever reason the south is very anti intellectual.
Which is not an observation about suffering and explanations. Very intellectual "cultures" are, in fact, quite capable of inflicting serious suffering. Take the inexplicable descent of Germany into Nazism in the 30s as one example.

You've got two things confused here. The one is the degree of suffering inflicted on blacks in the south. The other is intellectuality. Bigotry in the south is/was not necessarily an instance of anti-intellectuality. Just of bigotry. Intellectuals are just as capable of bigotry as "dumb" folk.
