TEL AVIV, Israel, PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla., and TOKYO, Nov. 26
/PRNewswire/ -- VisionTech Ltd., and Digital Media Labs Co., Ltd., a
subsidiary of CSK Co. Ltd., announced today that the companies have become the
world's first to succeed in developing a single-chip MPEG-2 encoder (MP@ML)
which integrates all of the image compression processing functions for the
MPEG-2 standard. VisionTech, through the efforts of Leonid Yavits, VP of
Engineering and Amir Morad, VP of R&D developed the core architecture,
algorithms and microcode of the product. A cooperative effort furthering the
development of the product was done with DML.
The product is currently in production with the company's manufacturing
partner. Most significantly, this single-chip MPEG-2 encoder offers all
compression processing functions, and does not require additional processors.
VisionTech's single-chip MPEG-2 encoder, a true single-chip encoder that
satisfies the MPEG-2 standard, offers the highest level of performance at cost
which is an order of magnitude less (than existing solutions) for mass
production consumer applications. The product has been tested successfully by
major computer, and consumer electronics companies in the US and Japan.

Product Overview:
The product encodes broadcast quality, full D1 images (NTSC 72Ox480 pixel
at 30 fps, or PAL, at 72Ox576 pixel at 25fps) in real time. The maximum speed
of data encoding is 24 Mbits per second. The motion vector search range is
plus or minus 150 pixels horizontally and plus or minus 34 pixels vertically.
The voltage is 33VDC, and power consumption is 6W. Using a 0.5 micron process
and five-layer CMOS technology, 5.2 million transistors are integrated on the
13.7mm by 13.7mm chip. The package is a 304-pin flat pack.

Future Prospects:
The product is available for a variety of applications such as PCs,
workstations, professional-use and consumer-use video equipment. Using this
product, today's sound boards that have only audio functions will be
transformed into low-cost, highly functional audio and video multimedia
boards. Together with the development of high-bandwidth global networking, PC
users will be able to enjoy digital video and interactive Internet video
communications. Furthermore, low-cost, high-quality digital images will
enable a variety of new image processing applications such as video cameras
for consumer and professional uses, security controlling, and analyzing. This
product also broadens the application area for digital images such as image
pattern recognition, character extraction, animation, motion analysis, and
tracing.

Additional Products:
VisionTech, has successfully created a family of products based upon the
company's single-chip encoder. The products, which are a PCI MPEG-2 video
encoder board, a PCI MPEG-2 video and audio encoder, PC1O4 rapid prototyping
MPEG-2 video board, and a PC104 rapid prototyping MPEG-2 audio encoding board.
These products share the similar price/performance breakthrough as the chip
itself. Further details will be forthcoming in a future press release.
