I don't know if you noticed but the largest behemoth has it's own hardware business... I see nothing wrong with MSFT getting into the hardware business...

M$ also has 50 plus retail stores. Their flagship store at MOA is directly across from the aapl one. I would consider a future M$ W8 tablet knowing that if needed service, a M$ store was down the road.

That would be a stunning development. I just can't imagine MSFT is going into the x86 or ARM CPU PC hardware business;

No idea what it means strategically in the long term for Microsoft and hardware partners, but I think it's safe to say that no one could else in Microsoft's value chain could have pulled off a product suite annoucement with as much fanfare and excitement as Microsoft just did. Surface is exciting to people in a way that no Lenovo, HP or Dell product has ever been.
