Compaq sees rebound in U.S. tech stocks Reuters Story - November 26, 1997 00:51 CPQ V%REUTER P%RTR HONG KONG, Nov 26 (Reuters) - High-profile U.S. technology shares will recover from recent volatility linked to worldwide financial turmoil, Compaq Computer Corp's president for Greater China Philip Yu said on Wednesday. "Technology stocks have been the darling for Wall Street and because of that they tend to have more ups and downs than the others," Yu told Reuters before a news conference. "Definitely I think they will recover because that really is the future." U.S. technology shares, which often sit in the driver's seat of New York's Nasdaq index, have suffered violent swings in recent weeks during turmoil in major financial markets and as investors watch for signs that fierce earnings growth is waning. "Look at Compaq -- the stock has gone up almost 120 percent since the beginning of the year," Yu said. "That kind of growth certainly is unprecedented, especially with what is going on worldwide in the economies and the banking systems, so people tend to have more jitters about these high-profile stocks." Compaq shares ended at US$59.125, down 87.5 cents, on Tuesday. This year, the stock has moved between highs around $79 and lows near $28. -- Hong Kong Newsroom (852) 2843 6441; Fax (852) 2845 0636
