Jim, from the AMD article you referenced, I read this:

From the current Byte magazine on the racks now, i got the impression that slot 1 was not being licensed and that the patents protecting it had to do with the electrical interface sequences and timings. How is AMD going to drop the K7 into the slot 1?

Perhaps it fits physically but will only talk with DEC's interface sequences?
