The 60's wasn't about Vietnam or the draft, or civil rights or free speech. It was the largest existential movement in the history of mankind; and that is what Raygun didn't understand or like. We hippies were trying to move the US into the 21st century.

But as Bob Dylan said:

"Something is happening here and you don't know what it is, do you Mr Raygun.?

So he lashed out at the hippies who the right wing saw as dirty loafers. Never mind that the head quarters was UC Berkeley, the top university in the world with the smartest kids. Kids who understood existentialism was the philosophy of the future.

And the hippies were generally the smartest kids in all the universities of the time.
