Rich, I'm a director of I/S. As I retool the offices with p166's, p200's, and p266's and up.
That person has a pc. I've been giving all those pc's to the factory and putting them to great use.
So, I've extended the life of pc from 3 yrs to 6 or 7 yrs..
MAny Directors of I/S are replacing 386's. I replaced allot of 386's at my last compnay, but at this compnay is all 486's to factory and test labs and alike.
There will be software in the future that allows speed to happen
of 486's. It just means I can put them to higher leverl use and extend there life.

So, NO ONE'S BUYING 386'S..THAT'S STUPID.
You buy a p200 or a p300 and replace a 386 or 486 or p90.
and then you move that replaced pc to a great use elsewhere in corporation.
Regardless of what meathead says(he's a engr) the name of the game isn't technology. the faster pc's. It's drastically increasing the quality of the process while drastically redcuing cost and cycle times. And that means optimizing technology purchases and extending life.

Did this make sense. It's simple..I have to buy p200's and p300's...what do I now do with the pc I replaced?????
Of course I've been doing this since(push down) 1983....
So, it's second nature now.

on Servers I do it allitle different.
I tend to buy the biggest momma out there loaded with as much hot swappable raid 5 drives I can and huge amt's of memory, the fastest everything...regardless of the need. On servers I don't buy to need.

did all this make sense.??????????

did you know that many phones systems still use 386 chip?????

Rich,

The U.S. Army is fielding a new automated supply system at the retail level called SARSS-O. A component of this system are hand-held barcode readers called MROCS which use RF technology to communicate with the main terminal. These bar code readers use a 386 microprocessor.
