I hate to say it UW, but sometimes I think the only function US wars serve today is to keep US defense contractors in business and I was a defense contractor employee for over 30 years. I know that's not entirely true, but it is a factor. Unfortunately, I think we've been going to war to maintain not only the hegemony that our country has enjoyed since the end of World War II, but also to guarantee that our fuel supplies (and by default, the collateral behind the petrodollar) are secure. Maintaining the military-industrial complex has always been a secondary goal. Looking back at all the wars that we've fought since 1945, I can't seem to find one that didn't have one of those two goals as an ulterior motive. Korea: Hegemony (block the Chinese/Soviets) Vietnam: Hegemony (block the Chinese/Soviets) Grenada: Hegemony (limit communism in the Caribbean) Panama: Hegemony (maintain control over the canal zone) Bosnia: Hegemony (establish control over the Balkans for NATO/America) Gulf War I: Oil (ensure that our "allies" control the majority of oil) Iraq: Oil, Hegemony Afghanistan: Hegemony (Revenge) Libya: Oil

I think the only function US wars serve today is to keep US defense contractors in business and I was a defense contractor employee for over 30 years. IMO you make a very valid point. I have similar thoughts often. Some of the changes are ridiculous yet very expensive. For example why, in the middle of war, are we transitioning from the Army green Class A uniform to the new Army blue uniform? How does changing the parade/dress uniform colors help us win our war? Who benefitted from that decision?
