this is a problem that all democracies face. in a democracy, theoretically, the majority is able to vote for themselves whatever they want. no more debt? no problem. it is rather surprising that the majority doesn't vote for themselves endless entitlements. you might argue that they have and do but in some ways it is remarkable that they have shown as much restraint as they have.

of course, closer to the truth, it is the plutocrats who find ways to keep the democratic process in check, not out of noblesse oblige, but because they don't like to share. thus, government is often at a standstill, which all things considered, is probably not a bad place for it to be...
