Pegging income tax rates to inflation probably did more to rein in inflation than anything else.

Before that inflation rewarded the Federal government with higher tax revenues without having to actually vote for higher taxes. Afterwards there was less incentive to enact inflationary policies.

Course all that's been thrown to the wind in the past decade.
