Atin, and All, ============= First, a Disclaimer: I am under contractual non-disclosure with several manufacturers and under gentlemen's agreement with others not to discuss their particular products at this time, as my firm is currently investigating many of the platforms discussed here, and providing logistic assistance to another. However, I am not prevented from discussing the generic aspects of VoIP or any other aspect of this technology in generic terms, in a setting such as this. Therefore, I ask for your indulgence if I decline at times to comment on a specific product or company. The areas that I cover are more edge- and core-network oriented, often taking a Common Carrier's and/or ISP's perspective on issues concerning global architectures and orchestration, and how those architectures will be impacted or enhanced by the emerging VoIP and IntServ- (Integrated IETF and ATM Forum) derived services, as they unfold. And there are many ways in which they will. I look forward to contributing in these areas when I see a fit, or when called upon. ============== Atin, Your DOS-Mac analogy speaks legions, and I'll have to remember it. Good Show! ============== As a point of clarification re: OC-3, and ATM in general in this arena: It may very well be that some vendors have OC-3 attributes built in to some of their product line in the way of interfaces, migration paths, protocol conversion, etc., but I don't recall seeing any claims, to date, that they will support native ATM at the speed of 155 Mbps any time soon, where VoIP is concerned. As I stated earlier, most internet traffic (roughly 60% by some estimates) already travels over ATM backbone pipes through encapsulation measures, but this traffic is routed at Layer 3, and rides atop ATM which resides beneath it (Layers 1 and 2). If you or anyone here can point me to where such a claim is made, I'd appreciate it. ============= Best Regards, And a Happy Thanksgiving to All! We're off to Pennsylvania Dutch Country and will return next week. Frank Coluccio
