"My response was completely appropriate" You never ever ever admit your wrongdoing! Only once when you shed those crocodile tears and apologised profusely for your meanness and your misrepresentations. But HOW LONG DID THAT LAST?? Something for you to think about, eh?? Your apology and your promise to change and to follow the rules of normalcy and decent human conduct was all a sham to buy you more time and to evade the argument you were losing at that time.
