Guy,

I agree with you that for most investors trying to guarantee retirement monies since the Federal Government can no longer do that is to invest with mutual funds. However, my complaint with mutual funds stems from the control they can exercise over the stock market and more importantly individual sectors and individual stocks. Jeff Vinik is a good example of the type of mutual fund manager I'm referring to. Those that have the power to pump and dump on their name alone or the name of the fund company. There are federal regulations on most every area of commerce, but I can't recall any regulation ever mentioned regarding mutual funds. The DOJ is so concerned about Microsoft dominating every competitor, but no one seems concerned about some huge mutual funds dominating and controlling prices of stocks. I hope the day comes soon to put controls on some of these behemoths in the name of keeping stable stock markets for everyone.
