Precisely. We won them in a matter of days. The nation building exercise is not something the military can do against the will of the natives.

I don't agree. I think we decisively won both Gulf Wars and the Afghanistan war.

I wish you were absolutely right.
We won a few battles decisively, but the final outcomes of our current wars have not been determined.
Try convincing the family of the 2,000th GI who was just killed in combat in Afghanistan, and the family of the 2001st who is either already dead or shortly will be, that we won decisively.

After all this war, are the Taliban and AQ weaker or stronger? Which are we?
They are now conducting combat OPS in more than a dozen countries and we are getting dragged along to play whack-a-mole with them.
Our own govt expects AQ to ramp up fighting here in America. See link-

A little book we discussed here several years ago explains how they (especially AQ) continue to grow stronger exponentially. It is titled The Starfish And The Spider. IMO the book is still valid, even more valid.
