Sarah Palin was not a negative to John McCain's campaign. Folks don't have good memories.
Agree, she was a net positive. But the campaign did not prepare her well for the colonoscope the press put to her. She was unprepared for some of the early interviews and she and the campaign allowed the opposition to define her. Huge mistake.

FWIW, McCain ran the most inept campaign since Dukakis ran.

McCain's poll numbers spiked after Palin's convention speech. Picking Palin put him back in the race, his numbers were down before that.
