The Philly index, much like the NY index, is one of the least important manu. indices. It covers a small part of the country whose manu. fortunes have diminished greatly in the last 50 years and tends to be very volatile. The most important manu. index is the ISM out of Chicago. That index remains above 50 which suggests continued expansion.

Here's the top 10 manufacturing cities. You'll note that NYC is number 2 behind Houston, although Philly's not in the top 10.

The top 10 industrial cities, including the total of manufacturing jobs were: Houston, 235,038; New York City, 140,952; Chicago, 107,264; St. Louis, 80,795; Los Angeles, 79,873; Cincinnati, 78,975: Dallas, 75,924; Indianapolis, 75,845; Phoenix, 74.154; and San Diego, 70,483.
As far as the ISM goes, the May ISM report showed a slowdown across almost all areas. Still positive, but trending slower. That's not good.
