I'm not so sure of that statistic. Kinsey said that about 10% of men admitted to having had a homosexual experience, but that was back a half-century ago and it didn't take into account the gay lifestyle that didn't exist back then. I've seen polls that put the number closer to 1-2% of openly gay people. But it's hard to get an accurate reading because people lie.

A large subset of that group has settled in San Francisco.

I am pretty sure it is not higher, for that matter. Experimentation is common, so I would discount that. My husband, a urologist, said that figure when I asked him. I think Nature would put it at the lower figure.
