And you don't have to settle up with the government until you're dead as the gift shrinks your estate tax exemption which is scheduled to go from 5 million this year to 1 million next year--I think. So a 500 thousand gift reduces your estate exemption to 4.5 million this year and .5 million next year.

So if you've got a big estate and are old you can do your relatives a big favor by dying before DEC 31st! (G).
