That's one recent extreme. But Goldwater in 1964 (William E. Miller) and Ross Perot ("why am I here?") in 1992 made bad picks.

Nixon picked Agnew and it didn't blow up ... until his second term when he was about to be indicted, and pled nolo contendere to avoid the indictment, resigned, and that led to Gerald Ford being appointed VP, and when he became President, he appointed Rockefeller VP.

Imagine if Agnew had been VP in 1974.

Or if Ford had picked someone centrist rather than NR, ... Bob Dole didn't get the job done for Gerald Ford in 1976. Ditto for Geraldine F in 1984.

Bush 41 was lucky with Dan Quayle in 1988 but that might have been a factor in 1992.
