What this chart tells us is that a cut in deficits results in a decrease in GDP. I think that's a no-brainer. Of course it does, because GDP measures spending. So if you cut spending, GDP goes down.

The more important takeaway.........unemployment has gone up dramatically under German austerity esp in Greece and Spain. And its why the Golden Dawn party, a neo nazi party that believes Hitler did not kill the Jews, is gaining power in Greece. In fact, we are seeing the same thing that happened to the Weimar Republic happening to Greece and pontentially happening to Spain. And I am sure Germans see the analogy but are choosing to ignore it out of their own self interests.

In any case, that is why your pure austerity concept is inappropriate during bad economic times........it creates a dangerous political environment even in the most stable of democracies. And its not Greece I am worried about..............its Spain.
