This isnt about Apple at all. Amazon has forked Android tablet app development and with their volumes, it could destroy any chance of Google creating the virtuous circle between volumes and developer interest that they have seen on the smartphone side. They need to grab that volume back before they have any chance of taking on Apple in the mid-tier.

As an Apple investor, root for Amazon.

Anyway, like you, I don't see this as an Apple threat, at all. Amazon, maybe. But as far as Apple is concerned? Not even a flesh wound.

IMHO a hedge against the future. Some think (me) that 80% of the computing devices sold in 10 years will be tablets. You may not win the initial battles, but all these guys know they have to fight them to have the experience to be in the war that's coming. The category is in, maybe, the second inning. Maybe the bottom of the first, with two outs, and Apple leading 40 million to 3 million, and Balmer pitching.

why they waded into the overcrowded 7" Android market
Makes me wonder that if Apple decided to cannonball in as well, would they, with their volume pricing power, come in at near the same price as Amazon and Goolge – but still make money? Oh the horror…

But how to position it uniquely enough so it wouldn't strip off full-size iPad sales…?

A WAG they did it to get Jelly Bean out there so developers can work with it. And they're not alone, it is co-branded with Asus.
